More parking space at cremation ground

Chandigarh: With the intention to manage the rush at Sector 25-based cremation ground, municipal corporation (MC) is all set to bring and discuss the agenda items to construct temporary additional parking outside the cremation ground boundary wall at an estimated cost of Rs 41 lakh. The agenda is coming up for the detailed discussion and approval in the monthly Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) meet on Thursday.

In total, nine agenda items are coming up for the detailed discussion and approval before the committee, which comprises agendas related to road division to install paver blocks at different sectors of the city, purchase of computer and related items among others.

"It has been observed that Sector 25-based cremation ground witness huge footfall on a daily basis and people struggle to find spaces to park their vehicles. Hence, they park them at unauthorized locations and on roadsides. Therefore, the agenda is coming up for discussion and approval," said an official of the MC.

Since the proposed temporary area is situated just next to the cremation ground, MC had requested the UT's architect department to allow them to remove the boundary wall and take the proposed area inside the cremation ground by constructing new boundary wall around it. But the architecture wing of the UT refused the move.

"We want to add the proposed land in cremation ground's area, so that the people get additional space to park their vehicles. But architecture department did not agree to it. However, we will raise the issue in coming days too," an official said.

Significantly, since the cremation ground is situated along the road with heavy moving traffic, parking of vehicles along the road side area can prove dangerous any time.
