Lack of parking space outside shops, malls adds to traffic chaos
Jaipur: The absence of proper places for parking vehicles in commercial buildings like malls, sweet-shops, colleges and hospitals, the parking of vehicles on the roadside has led to severe traffic jams, especially during the peaks hours in the city.
The situation is particularly severe in market areas like Barkat Nagar and Raja Park where illegal parking often spills over into residential areas.
The entire stretch of Tonk Road has over a dozen leading sweet shops and restaurants, yet none of the commercial establishments here have proper parking provisions for their customers.
Adding to the problems is the issue of illegal parking or commercial institutions encroaching over the pavements and turning it into a parking lot.
The problem is compounded due to lack of police patrolling on these roads. "We had been asking some of these shop owners to make proper parking provisions so that flow of traffic does not get affected. But they have not abide with our orders," said a traffic official.
The police officials said that as per rules, the civic bodies should take into consideration if these commercial places have enough parking spaces for their customers.
"There are many malls which have adequate underground parking spaces. Other restaurants provide valet parking too, but several others have none. The civic body should not give building permission to commercial places which fails to earmark enough parking spaces for the vehicles," said an official.
The problem is particularly difficult in areas where hospitals and clinics are located. "It is true that many small hospitals and nursing homes are located in residential areas and they occupy most of the parking places. But, the police doesn't have power to take action against such violators," said a Jaipur police official, adding that the police stations across the city are flooded with complaints of illegal parking.
