Mindless car parking turned stretch risky

The stretch from Phoolbagan to Beliaghata Post office on the Hemchandra Naskar Roadwas dotted with cars and buses parked on both sides of the road on Thursday .Indiscriminate parking on the road not only ate up almost a third of the carriageway on both sides, but blocked commuters' clear view of the road.

"This is what happened to Ra bindranath Das on Thursday morning. If he had a clear view of the road, he could have seen the crane coming. It was his fault to go on the wrong side, but the death could be avoided," said Mita Das, a local.

Police are aware of the trouble but could not do much as the road is yet to be notified as a "no parking zone" or a "fee parking zone" by the KMC. "There is no notification from the KMC. It would have helped to solve the problem," said a sergeant. In absence of a notification, a sergeant can lodge a case of blocking the carriageway or indiscriminate parking, but that is not a deterrent enough as the penalty is paltry.
"We will look into the issue if that is the case," said an official with the KMC car parking department.

The presence of a number of schools near Hemchandra Naskar Road has added to cop concern. While they have restricted parking in front of schools, rest of the stretches are free parking zones.
